The other side of the pulpit… life as a pastor

Perry has a terrific post called “The Pastor’s Pain” in which he gives the inside scoop on what it’s like to be a pastor.

He talks about the “three pains” of a pastor:

1) The pain from loneliness

2) The pain from criticism

3) The pain from unrealistic expectations

  1. Wow, Perry’s post made me cry. Well it didn’t make me cry but writing a note to my own pastor made me cry. I just figure that pastors willingly take on the public eye and all that comes with it. I don’t think about the personal feelings very often.

  2. Add the fourth pain — the pain of separation. Each person in the flock, especially in a smaller congregation, becomes knit to your heart. Then when you are called to leave and minister somewhere else, the ripping apart of two people joined together is painful. I know you have been through this recently Paul! Whenever the member leaves to go to another church, it hurts.

There is also the combination shots; separation pain with criticism pain; separation pain with loneliness pain, etc. The enemy knows whwre we are vulnerable. But we have the whole armor of God to stand against him. Fight on friend!
