The lonely side of leadership

Last night as I watched Bill Belichick walk off the field I was struck by a couple things…

He was just as disappointed as his team by the Super Bowl loss.

He was just as disappointed as his team that a perfect season had just been spotted by a single loss.

He was just as disappointed as his team, but his team looked to him to lift them, encourage them, and breathe life into them for another day.

He didn’t look to them… they looked to him.

There are times when leaders, as disappointed and weakened as anyone else, are responsible for lifting and encouraging others.

There are days when leaders, though they have nothing to give, must give anyhow.

This is the loneliest point of leadership.
