From My Notebook (17 February – 20 March 2020)

These are notes/quotes in my notebook on which I will ACT (Act on, Contemplate, Teach).  These notes come from conversations with other people and murmurs within my head throughout the day.

  • Jocko Willink’s “Laws of Combat”: 1) Cover and move, 2) Keep it simple, 3) Prioritize and execute, 4) Decentralize command.  These rules are easily applicable to life and leadership in ANY environment (home, school, church, etc.).  Read this article for further explanation.

  • Don’t blame the darkness for being dark… it is simply doing what it does.  The only cure for darkness is light. “YOU are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14).

  • “In matters of conscience and duty always go with your first thought.  In matters of judgment always go with your second thought.”

  • “If your kids come back to you after a fight, you’re doing something right.”

  • “No excuse Sergeant” is NOT an acceptable answer for a thoughtful leader.  There is always a reason.  Leaders dig in and find out WHY their troops are struggling.

  • Working hard workers harder is not a long term solution.  You have to reconsider your systems.

  • “Counseling is one person talking to another in a way that helps them get better.”

  • “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

  • Do my habits help me maintain homeostasis or are they helping me change?  Sometimes staying the same is good… but what habits will help me get better?

  • Is it possible to do DEEP THINKING in SHORTER BURSTS?

  • Six functions of a TOC: 1) receive information, 2) distribute information, 3) analyze information, 4) submit recommendations to the commander, 5) integrate resources, 6) synchronize resources
