Physical Friday

I am going to begin reserving Fridays for blogging on physical matters. Since I believe that all things are connected you will likely see crossover between such things are spiritual, physical, mental, etc.

So, for the last month I have been in a strength training program. Jim Wendler’s 5/3/1 program. Here’s a link to an interview he did with T-Nation in which he discussed this program.

This program revolves around the idea of building strength… which is different than building muscle size. For strength you lift heavier weight fewer times (1-5 times per set). For muscle mass you lift moderately heavy weight more times (6-10 times per set).

Wendler’s program is built around the four “staples of any strong man’s repetoire”: the bench press, parallel squat, deadlift, and standing press.

I’ve never trained for strength before. I’ve just lifted weights because I wanted to be healthy… and look good for Mrs. Peterson.

Only one month into this program I am already seeing results (I’ve added 25 pounds to my deadlift in 4 weeks!). I can’t wait to see what happens in the ensuing months.

At this point my goal is to participate in a Powerlifting Meet in June. I expect to participate in the 181 pound weightclass. After the Meet I intend to begin training for my second Physique Show which will be held in October. In case you’re wondering why a Powerlifting Meet… here are seven reasons.

I’ll leave you with a great quote from the article I just linked to…

When was the last time you were truly out of your comfort zone? Doing  something you weren’t even sure was sane or right? If you can’t remember, I can tell you one thing – you’re stagnant. If you’re not consistently scared and uncomfortable, you’re not making  progress. Period.
